RIGOLETTO
JUNE 22nd, 2004

This wonderful opera, by Giuseppi Verdi, is set within the context of an Eastern European one-ring family circus
complete with an array of circus performers, including Rigoletto, the sad clown, and Sparafueile,
a roadie/tentmaster, and his sister Maddalena, a fortune teller. The theme of one person's
power over another is embodied in the evil Ringmaster, who boosts or his amorous conquests
and ultimately seduces Rigoletto's beloved daughter, Gilda. Vowing revenge, Rigoletto pays
Sparafucile to kill the Ringmaster, but the sad clown is ultimately destroyed as Gilda sacrifices
herself for her lover and is murdered in place of the Ringmaster.
Wildwood Artistic Director Ann Chotard returns as stage director for this tragic opera. This is her
first production since 1998's imaginative Madame Butterfly.
Wildwood favorites, Rob Holden, Geroge Dyer, and Gregory Pearson return to the stage as Rigoletto,
the Ringmaster, and Sparafucile. Soprano Amy Cofield makes her Wildwood debute as Gilda. Piot Sulkowski
conducts the gypsy band, which is part of the action on stage. Rigoletto will be sung
in English.
